COME ADVERTISE WITH US TODAY!

Since many sites deliberated inflate hit counts due to their web page constructions, we are just reporting the Page counts and visits.

NOTE: We use Google Analytics and AWSTATS to monitor our web site.

Hits- Recently the number of hits has become a less reliable indicator of web activity. Granted a large number of hits usually and logically should mean big numbers elsewhere. However, some site are or were deliberately arranging themselves to force users and reporting system to record a large number of hits.

So, let's take a closer look at the hits recorded for WatchTheDeer. On Tuesday, December 4th , AWSTATS logged 1,751,035 hits. (Google does not record hits at this lowest level). Exactly what does this mean?

Well, let's do some detective work of our own. When your web browser loads the primary picture page with four smaller images, about 12 hits results. Why about 12, well generally each graphic image, not just the camera images, counts as a hit. Thus pages with lots and lots of segmented graphic images will have large hit count just for loading a page.

WatchTheDeer is a bit lower with initial graphic hits when you load the 4-view page. However, our page updates every ten seconds, so that is 6 updates per minute. Only the camera images update so those 6 updates in a minute become 6 hits. Therefore if someone stays on our site for ten minutes, we get 72 hits. (6 times 10 plus the original 12). These numbers are not exaggerated, but due to the nature of our site the hit count is very high. For your information, the page count/visits would be one.

Page Views- Google Analytics counts a page view twice if you wait over 30 minutes and revisit the page. AWSTATS counts it twice without the time restriction. Thus Google is a stiffer requirement and hurts us due to the way people watch our page. We expect Google numbers to be lower because of the 30 minute time limit.

For example, look at the page Views from each system for Monday, December 3 thru Thursday, December 6, 2007

Date
Google
AWSTATS
3-Dec 99,286 293,891
4-Dec 106,490 354,762
5-Dec 105,578 370,767
6-Dec 96,433 338,286

From Nov 13 thru Dec 6, Google recorded 1,605,808 pageviews.

The trend is clear, more people watch and visit during hunting seasons! But that does fit our typical viewer, 96% are hunters!
